The Evolution of WEB 2.0 to social network

Many people may or may not aware that internet is undergoing quiet revolution on its own. The value and usability of internet has been elevated tremendously since the advent of WEB 2.0 .

What is WEB 2.0?

WEB 2.0 is the popular term for advance internet technology and application including blogs, wikis, RSS, and social book marking. It offers greater collaboration among internet users and other users, content providers and enterprises than WEB 1.0.

Many countries including Malaysia have benefited from the evolution where blog plays a major role in the making of 308 tsunami. Likewise, OBAMA has taken grassroots campaigning into the digital age by embrace WEB 2.0 and using it as a central platform of his presidency campaign. In fact, OBAMA turned WEB 2.0 into a major force in his campaign.

He utilizes the social network applications like FACEBOOK and MYSPACE to build his popularity among the youth and to promote his political view. In the past, American young voters might have been enthusiasm in campaigning but voter turnout has been poor. But Obama has been successfully turned around the trend by recorded the highest turnout in 40 years. Today, OBAMA has more than 1 mil contacts in facebook and myspace.

Communication has been always the key to winning. For Roosevet, it was radio. For the case of John F Kennedy, it was television. And for Barack Obama, it is social media.

And now we are seeing the next wave of revolution in web through TWITTER. Twitter-micro blogging on sms is gaining its popularity at huge momentum. Just yesterday, US government has urged Twitter to delay a planned maintenance outage because of the social blogging site’s use as a communications tool by Iranians following their disputed election.

Iran government has shut down other websites, cell phones, and newspapers. And twitter has become their communication tool to unfold the news to other people. Iranian people broadcast the news as what they seen in the rally and links to the photo taken at the scene. All of these are happening instantly via SMS and make it more difficult for the authority to control.

We anticipate Twitter to develop its influence to extend as blog does.

Influenza pandemic alert level 6

WHO elevated influenza pandemic alert level to 6 the highest possible alert level. Here is the definition:

Phase 6, the pandemic phase, is characterized by community level outbreaks in at least one other country in a different WHO region in addition to the criteria defined in Phase 5. Designation of this phase will indicate that a global pandemic is under way.

Click here to see the definition of Phase 5.

Based on WHO statistic, 30 000 AH1N1 confirmed cases have been reported in 74 countries. Unlike the seasonal influenza, the AH1N1 virus preferentially infects the younger people. Most of the confirmed cases have been found with people under 25 years old. However, most cases of severe and fatal infection have been in adult between ages 30 to 50 years.

WHO advises that the world now is at the start of the influenza pandemic.

The world should prepare to see further spread of cases in the near future. Countries where outbreaks have peaked should prepare for second wave of infection. Countries with no infection or few cases shall remain vigilant.

WHO will continuously in close contact with vaccines manufacturer to ensure the supply of vaccines at full capacity once they are available in months to come. No restriction on travel or borders closures is recommended.

Love To Save

The recent campaign, “For those who love to save” has received a lot of positive feedback from the public. For those who wish to know more, here is the Intranet story posted recently for your reference. You can also visit the website for more info: http://www.lovetosave.com.my

You, or anyone else living in Malaysia, can now go to http://www.lovetosave.com.my, choose their favorite charity, and "click" to support. DiGi will be donating RM5 per click the charity of their choice - in a mission to raise RM150,000 in 30 days. The campaign will be held from 1 June - 30 June, 2009.

The mission of this initiative is to raise RM150,000 in 30 days through online click-support (not actual monetary donations from the public). You can choose who you want DiGi to support, by choosing from a list of predetermined charities. Each charity would receive a minimum donation of RM1,000 (i.e. each charity would automatically start off with 200 clicks or RM1,000).

You can choose to support a particular charity via Public Groups or Personal Groups (by individual supporters, online, for the various charities). Each registered user is only allowed to click/vote for one (1) charity.
